The New Jersey/New York multi-billion dollar goods movement, or logistics industry is a tightly integrated network that moves over 100 million tons of cargo annually. That cargo feeds, clothes and meets the purchasing demands of the 100 million people who live within one day of the Port of New York and New Jersey.
Over 240,000 residents within the port region are employed directly or indirectly as a result of goods moving through the Port of New York and New Jersey. As displayed in the following table, nearly 501,000 people are employed in goods movement throughout the region.

In 2006, ships transported over 5 million TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units), or $149 Billion in cargo, a 6.4 % increase in total volume and a 13 percent increase in value over 2005. It is estimated that the New York/New Jersey goods movement industry will contribute over $5.8 billion in local, state and federal taxes.
