J. David Stein - Executive Director

Before joining Nation’sPort, Mr. Stein served as Director of Regional Planning at the North Jersey Transportation Planning Authority, including directing the Freight Planning staff.

Prior to that, he was Planning Specialist for the North Carolina Cooperative Extension, Manager, in which position he worked as a planning advisor for communities throughout the state. He was Program Manager and Principal Planner for more than 12 years for the Southern California Association of Governments (SCAG) the largest MPO in the nation where he prepared the first Regional Comprehensive Plan and also established one of the nation’s first Goods Movement Advisory Committees, as well as having responsibility for planning for air quality and transit at the regional scale.

In the 1970’s he served as Director of Transportation for the former New England Regional Commission, where he directed efforts to preserve the independence of the bankrupt regional railroads other than Penn Central serving New England during the formation of ConRail in the 1970’s.

Mr. Stein has also worked overseas in India and Israel. He holds both BA and MCP degrees from the University of California at Berkeley.
