The Organization

What We're Here To Do -- and How We're Going To Get It Done

The New York City metropolitan region and the inland market areas from the Atlantic coast to the Mississippi River depend upon a vast system of transportation operating and infrastructure assets--plus related logistics service providers--to move goods between nations, domestic industries, and ultimately to consumers. It is one of the primary engines of the regional economy serving 22 million people at the core and over 100 million within a day’s truck drive.

The rapid growth in international trade continually places greater demands on this system in terms of volume accommodation, increased efficiency and more reliable service.  Successfully adapting the system to this constantly evolving environment is a challenge which must engage both private and public interests.  Fulfillment of Nation'sPort new mission involves accomplishing three goals:

  • Collaboratively market to a variety of audiences the current integrated goods movement system emanating from the Port of New York and New Jersey;
  • Provide goods movement impact and value information to both general and targeted populations within the region’s base;
  • Develop a broad based coalition of stakeholders to participate in generating the changes and investments required to grow the system and thereby, the region’s economy.

Current Problem Identification and Remediation

Proper definition of the problem is a critical step to ensure that Nation’sPort succeeds in its mission Ultimately, effective promotion requires that the region and its stakeholders conduct a comprehensive inventory of our assets and the impediments to achieving the system’s potential.  In the absence of a clear and comprehensive definition of the problem, the efforts of the coalition at system improvement will be compromised. Nation’sPort will work with all stakeholders to:

  • Develop an un-biased assessment of the region’s and the system’s opportunities and deficiencies;
  • Facilitate the synthesis of a consensus on the value of and approach to any recommended solutions;
  • Advocate for the private and public resources to be directed to the entity or entities responsible for implementation of the solution; and will
  • Provide sustained support to the participating parties throughout the implementation process.

It is the intent of Nation’sPort, where appropriate, to advocate for and facilitate a system-wide dialogue and development of actions plans that make the Port of New York and New Jersey the port of first choice for any shipper seeking to bring goods to the east coast of North America.

Accommodation of Future Growth and Development of New Services

Nation’sPort will assist in, quantify and/or verify:

  • Development of cargo volume forecasts for the next 20 years;
  • The nature, capacity and timing of cargo handling facilities that will be needed to accommodate volume growth;
  • The nature, location and timing of the required supporting infrastructure;
  • Those new services that will be needed by system users and when they will be required;
  • The system economics that will be required to be competitive;
  • The governmental role in realizing growth accommodation and new services.

Market New Asset Capabilities and Services

As the Plan unfolds and new assets and capabilities evolve, Nation’sPort will:

  • Develop “macro” marketing programs that generally promote the innovations and improvements in the system to end-user and Port constituents;
  • Provide market research and forecasting information to Nation’sPort members to help identify market opportunities and end-user service requirements;
  • Distribute competitive cost and service information about other regions, as is appropriate within parameters of confidentiality, to Nation’sPort members;
  • Help service providers to market their own specific products and pricing to end-users in response to market demands;
  • Promote and communicate governmental contributions to the system’s development;
  • Serve as a communications focal point for feedback from service providers, end-users and government agencies on marketing campaign and development progress.

Nation’sPort’s Contributions to the System’s Development Plan

Through the Board of Directors, its Standing Committees and Staff, Nation’sPort will:

  • Create the forum in which goods movement industry stakeholders can come together to:
  • Function as an integrated system, where the sum of the whole is greater than its parts, to address the region’s problems and opportunities as a goods movement community capable of working together; and
  • Identify changes necessary to improve the system’s performance.
  • Provide an “expert network” able to:
  • Work in solution teams; and
  • Support the public information and marketing needs for expert opinion and referral.

  • Create the forum where government representatives serving planning, transportation, land use, environment and labor issues can work with the goods movement industry stakeholders to:
  • Prioritize delivery of solutions; and
  • Facilitate the delivery of an integrated, jurisdictionally-blind intermodal transportation system.
  • Lend governments’ voices, expertise and authority in a common forum to:
  • Work with industry stakeholders and fellow government representatives in solution teams (see below); and
  • Support the public information and marketing needs for expert opinion and referral.

  • Facilitate the development of project specific “Solution Teams”
  • Identify the project-specific industry stakeholders and government agencies responsible for development and delivery of solutions or changes to the benefit of the goods movement industry; and
  • Facilitate and make record of the “investment matrix” necessary to deliver the desired end result:
  • Intellectual investments (people);
  • Research/investigations (professional/academic);
  • Project timelines and deliverables (project management and capital investment schedules).
  •  Provide support to all solution teams by:
  • Coordinating meetings;
  • Providing information to teams as requested;
  • Facilitating discussions where beneficial.

  • Promote the work of the Nation’sPort membership by:
  • Supporting the implementers and investors in necessary changes;
  • Acknowledging each positive remediation action and accounting for its positive impact
  •  Keep a positive public report card to applaud success and to maintain momentum; and
  • Advocating at the state and federal levels to:
  • Oppose obstructionist legislation, regulations or ordinances;
  • Advance beneficial legislation, regulations or ordinances.

  • Promote the region’s evolving goods movement system as the place to move the world’s trade to and from eastern North America.
